Accessible garden space and mural

A case study by Ellesia Hanna, Youth Social Action Apprentice at Nottingham College, Derby College and Leicester College.

This project emerged from student led discussions around the importance of mental health, accessibility, and sustainability within the college environment. Students identified a neglected and underused outdoor area on campus and proposed transforming it into a welcoming garden space that could be enjoyed by all students—particularly those with additional needs. The idea was to not only improve the space but to ensure that it was inclusive and sensory friendly, benefitting learners from the college’s Specialist Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (SLDD) department.
