AoC Mental Health and Wellbeing Award - Wigan and Leigh College Case Study

Our approach combines cross college activities and targeted specialist support, ensuring the promotion of positive mental health permeates the organisation. Effective wellbeing support is fully embedded.

Our model uses both cross college mechanisms and specialist support to promote independence and resilience. Our modern and creative approach encompasses mindfulness, meditation, tutorials and technology, equipping learners to combat their own anxieties, stress and low mood by providing them with the awareness, information, tools and skills necessary to manage their wellbeing.

Attitudes towards support for wellbeing have transformed; increased numbers of learners have accessed our services as less stigma is now associated with support because of our positive approach. There has been significant impact on the achievement rates of learners with mental ill health, increasing by 4.3% between 16/17 and 17/18.

Our model of wellbeing support is a model for everyone. We believe all learners will benefit from accessing mechanisms that promote positive mental health. We have a range of ongoing assemblies, tutorials, promotional events, sporting activities and technological and creative pursuits that all learners are encouraged to access.

The combination of a dedicated, specialist support service and an embedded, whole college approach to wellbeing has ensured incredibly positive outcomes for our learners.
