- A lesson in success: how Wolverhampton parents are transforming their futures
A lesson in success: how Wolverhampton parents are transforming their futures
City of Wolverhampton College
Across Wolverhampton, parents have been staying at school after drop-off for lessons of their own.
Set up by City of Wolverhampton College’s employability team in 2018, the Essential Skills for Life and Work programme gives parents access to education within their child’s school environment, making learning both accessible and familiar. A wide range of courses are available including English, maths, Paediatric First Aid, Emergency First Aid, Preparation for Work, and ESOL Everyday Skills.
The approach has been transformative, supporting parents to develop both the skills they need for the world of work, and to help their children with their homework.
In the last 18 months alone, more than 85 parents have engaged with these programmes, with many choosing to enrol in multiple courses. A significant number have progressed onto accredited adult learning at the main college campuses demonstrating the programme’s success in supporting long‑term skills development and progression.
Regular conversations with the family liaison and support teams across local schools confirm that the need remains significant and the college is keen to grow the project, partner with more schools and support even more parents in the future.
The same courses have also been delivered for local community projects and women’s charities, supporting diverse local families and vulnerable individuals who may not otherwise be able to access education.
The employability team remains firmly committed to promoting lifelong learning and ensuring that education is accessible to all. By delivering courses directly within the community at convenient venues and in collaboration with schools, charities, and local organisations, barriers to learning and employment are removed. Ultimately, the goal is to empower individuals to build the skills and confidence needed to improve their futures and contribute positively to their families, schools, and wider communities.
