SGS A Level Students celebrate fantastic results following the pandemic

The past 2 years have been exceptionally challenging for students, teachers and the wider community, but today SGS Sixth Form students are celebrating some truly outstanding results.

A significant number of Year 13 students were awarded A*/As with 65 in total, many making extraordinary progress based upon their grades on entry. In the Sixth Form, 69% of students achieved grades (A*- C) with an overall pass rate of 97%.

There are highlights across all 25 subjects including: 73% A*- B for Physical Education, 70% A*- B for Biology and 66% A*- B in Psychology. In addition, 66% of our Forensics and Criminal Investigation students achieved high grades in our newest BTEC subject. As a Sixth Form, we consistently provide a well-rounded, inclusive education that enables students to reach their full potential and continue our reputation as one of the best Sixth Forms in the South West.

Assistant Principal, Mark Anthony Jones commented: “Our students have made exceptional progress and proved that through hard work, commitment and ambition, you can and will realise your dreams. Many will now progress onto university, apprenticeships, and work, having made exceptional academic and personal progress; holistic education is about providing the skills necessary to make a difference and I could not be prouder of our class of 2021-22. Of course, this could not be done without the care, guidance and support of our amazing staff.”

Heads of Sixth Form, Gary Parsons and Becky Riddell added that they are “thrilled with the performance within the Sixth Form” and that the results “can be attributed to the dedication of each and every A Level student and the support provided by both the staff and parents”.

One example of this is 18 year old, Lara Edwards who has received her results today. She gained an A* in Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics, an A in Law and a B in Sociology. She is now off to study Law at Swansea University. Lara commented:

"I feel so relieved that I have got the results that I wanted. I am so glad. I am now going to study Law at Swansea University and I cannot wait. The teachers at SGS really want the best from you and they try their hardest to get the most out of you."

At SGS students can also study for an A Level alongside a BTEC qualification. Two years ago, the College launched a new course in Forensics and Criminology, with the first cohort of students receiving their results today.

Megan Jowitt, aged 20, was part of this first cohort. Megan left school and chose to do a make-up course which she undertook for two years. She then did an apprenticeship in Marketing but felt it wasn't for her. She saw the new Forensics course at SGS and was inspired, so she applied instantly. Today she received a Distinction * Distinction (A*A) which is the second highest mark you can get in a BTEC. She also received a B in A Level Sociology. Megan will now study Forensic Investigation at the University of South Wales.

Megan stated: "I never really knew what I wanted to do when I left school. I was really interested in make-up but after I finished my course, I couldn't get a job in the industry. I am so glad that I found this programme. I have loved every minute of it, and I cannot believe my results. I am so excited to be starting the next chapter of my life and going off to university. It is all thanks to SGS Sixth."
