- New City College shines a spotlight on apprentices in National Apprenticeship Week
New City College shines a spotlight on apprentices in National Apprenticeship Week
New City College is proud to celebrate national Apprenticeship Week that shines a spotlight on the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and the economy. And the college is even prouder of the industry links, expert trainers and the support it provides to help apprentices thrive.
NCC has created a special National Apprenticeship Week website which highlights all the fantastic achievements of staff and students.
Featured student Drew is a Carpentry and Joinery apprentice who is gaining hands-on experience at DSJ Bespoke, a professional joinery workshop which is part of the DSJ Group.
Drew says that his apprenticeship is giving him the chance to earn and learn - and he loves every minute of it.
He said: “I have learnt so much from the skilled professionals since I started working here. At first I was watching, observing and just asking questions, but now I am trusted with individual tasks and using the machinery.
“I love spending time in the workshop. Every day is different and I am like a sponge, soaking up everything I am being taught. I find that I learn quicker through practical work, rather than being in a classroom every day.”
Another successful NCC apprentice, Olivia, was studying A Levels but quickly realised she had chosen the wrong pathway. She switched to a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship - which she felt would be more suitable for her career aims and says making the change was one of the best decisions she has made.
She said: “It was scary deciding to swap from A Levels to an apprenticeship, but looking back now, I’m so glad I made that decision.
“I began my apprenticeship in September 2023, and since then I’ve completed and passed my course! During that time, I worked at Harrison How Ltd, an electrical contractor in London as an Office Administrator – a role that’s kept me busy, challenged, and constantly learning. Even after finishing my course, I’m still working at the same company and continuing to enjoy every moment.
“Doing this apprenticeship has been such a big confidence booster. Working with clients every day has helped me step out of my comfort zone, communicate more effectively, and handle new situations with ease.
“Throughout my apprenticeship, both at work and at New City College, I felt completely supported. There were so many valuable things I learned that have had a real impact on how I approach my job and even how I see myself professionally.
“My teachers were always so supportive and I found the course incredibly worthwhile. I’d recommend it to anyone considering this path.
“If you’re someone who’s thinking about working in an office-based or administrative environment, I can’t recommend an apprenticeship enough. It opens up so many opportunities for the future and gives you real hands-on experience that you just can’t get from studying alone.
“Taking that leap into an apprenticeship has definitely been one of the best choices I’ve ever made!”
