Creative Arts in FE 2024 – developing student voice through creativity

Graphic with text that reads 'Creative Arts in Fe 2024 - developing student voice through creativity' including sponsor logos and a design of a book.

Following the success of the Creative Writing in FE 2023 project, we are delighted to announce that we are launching a new version of the programme for 2024. Celebrating creative writing is still at the core of this opportunity, but we are opening up responses to the brief to include Creative Writing, Photography, Visual Arts and Spoken Word.

The Creative Arts in FE 2024 programme is supported by programme sponsors the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) and UAL Awarding Body.

This programme will give students in FE colleges the chance to create their own piece of creative writing, photography, visual art or spoken word in response to a brief set by UAL Awarding Body. It will be an opportunity to creatively explore issues that are key to young people and their peers, alongside building their own creative practice and portfolios. We of course welcome submissions from the wider college community (full entry criteria can be found below).

There will be the chance to learn from authors and artists via interviews that’ll be shared throughout the project, to understand different creative processes and approaches, and to have selected work published via the AoC website in an online anthology and gallery. We’ll also be sharing works throughout November in a social media celebration and at the annual AoC Conference in Birmingham.

The key ethos of this programme is taking part, so please encourage students to put pen to paper, transform ideas into designs and most importantly embrace their creativity.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions are open from Wednesday 6th March to 12 noon on Monday 13th May 2024.

All submissions must be made by a staff member.

In order to take part you must be an enrolled student or college staff member. We encourage the college community to be involved in this project.

Each college taking part must have a member of staff who will oversee the submission process and be a point of contact throughout the project.

Each college taking part can submit up to 5 submissions (or 5 submissions per college site if your organisation is across multiple sites). There is no minimum number of submissions.

Submissions must be accompanied by a signed consent form which can be found on the AoC website. One consent form must be completed per piece of work submitted. Submissions without an accompanying consent form will not be accepted.

We hope to let you know which pieces have been chosen to be showcased by early July 2024.

Please consider that work will be shown digitally. If you are submitting a physical piece of work you will need to document this and submit it digitally. No submissions will be accepted by post.

  • Writing: maximum 500 words submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Please ensure that each file submitted is named as follows ‘studentname_submissiontitle_college’ and this information is also included within the word document itself.
  • Images: one image per submission. This can be an image that documents a physical outcome or a photographic image which is the submission itself. The image will need to be maximum 1200 pixels wide and no larger than 1MB, ideally 600KB. Please ensure that each file is named as follows ‘studentname_submissiontitle_college’.
  • Videos: one video per submission. Videos should be a maximum of 2 minutes long and shared as an MP4 file. If there is any speaking, spoken word or singing in the video please provide a full transcript and ensure that videos are subtitled. Please ensure that each file is named as follows ‘studentname_submissiontitle_college’. Please contact us directly if you are the member of staff overseeing this and intend to submit videos.
  • Audio: one file per submission. Please ensure this is submitted as an MP3 file alongside a full transcript and brief description of the piece. Please ensure that each file is named as follows ‘studentname_submissiontitle_college’.

Please ensure that any submitted work is original and not breaking any copyright. Please note that all videos will need to be captioned for accessibility reasons.

The decision of the project team selecting works for the online showcase, gallery, social media promotion and AoC Annual Conference display will be final.

We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Brief

The brief has been designed by UAL Awarding Body and should be used to guide submissions.

Resources

This session pack considers copyright and creativity. By the end of the session leaners will understand key copyright terms, and the interplay of inspiration and imitation, through discussion of copyright case studies. The session concludes with learners reflecting on how copyright can inform their original creations, and how they can protect themselves from imitation.

This session pack has been designed by the CLA.

Consent Form

All submissions must be accompanied by a signed consent form. You can download a copy here.

Promotional Poster

Please feel free to download this poster and use it in your college to promote the Creative Arts in FE programme.
