Colleges Week 2026: London South East Colleges Student wins Bricklaying Competition

A bricklaying student from London South East Colleges’ Holly Hill Campus has taken first place in the Greater London Brickwork Skills Competition.

The competition, held at New City College, formed part of the Greater London Skills Competition 2026 and took place during this year's Colleges Week (2–6 March 2026).

A number of Level 2 Bricklaying learners competed as part of the programme of events, bringing together over 300 learners from 15 colleges across London. Competitive events take place across 14 technical skills areas, including construction, engineering, digital, creative and health.

The Bricklaying competition involved a four-hour build, which Oliver won, followed by a networking lunch with industry experts giving learners the chance to meet with business owners and fully qualified practitioners.

“Oliver did us proud,” said Danny Gardner, senior specialist lecturer brickwork at London South East Colleges. “It was great to attend with two of my learners and meet young people from across London learning technical skills. All the competitors were excellent and can be proud of their achievements, showcasing their work in front of experts.

“I was delighted when it was announced that Oliver had won.”

The Association of Colleges puts on the competition every year with the support of the Mayor of London with the aim of celebrating the achievements of young people at London’s colleges and inspiring future generations to follow technical and vocational courses.
