Beth Wolstenholme

PDBA Programme Manager, Leeds City College

Research Bio

After completing MA Education (Leadership and Management) in 2024, Beth’s interests peaked around leadership, staff belonging, and motivation.

Safeguarding was a crucial part of her role as PDBA Programme Manager, sparking an interest in the impact the role has on the professional. After 2 and a half years of being a Designated Safeguarding Lead, Beth realised the role had significantly changed the way she sees the world and her motivation to continue in the role. After speaking to colleagues and realising this was not a unique experience, Beth was surprised to find no literature around the topic, inspiring her to undertake a research doctorate.

Research title: Seeing the World Through a Safeguarding Lens: Exploring the Impact of Vicarious Trauma on the Beliefs, Values, Motivations and Practices of Appointed Safeguarding Professionals in Further Education

Aim: To investigate the lived experiences of Designated Safeguarding Leads in Further Education supporting IMD quartile 1 and 2, with a focus on how vicarious trauma influences their perception of the world and professional motivation.

This research aims to provide a meaningful insight into the impact vicarious trauma has on the worldviews and motivation of safeguarding officers in FE. While there are many studies around trauma informed practice and the impact of trauma on students, existing research does not address the effect of vicarious trauma of safeguarding officers in the Further Education sector. Though this study is specific to Further Education, it could lead to further research to shape and inform any role with an emotional workload.
