Association of Colleges announces three new scholars for Research Further initiative
The Association of Colleges (AoC) is proud to announce the appointment of three new scholars to its prestigious Research Further programme, supported by the AoC Charitable Trust.
The newly appointed scholars, Jamie Pearson from Darlington College, Angela Fantis from Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College and Beth Wolstenholme from Leeds City College will join a growing community of researchers exploring key themes such as inclusion in FE, the use of generative AI and the impact secondary trauma has on the worldviews and motivation of safeguarding officers in FE. Their work will contribute to a wider body of knowledge aimed at shaping policy and improving outcomes for students nationwide.
Research Further is a sector-leading initiative that empowers further education professionals to undertake postgraduate research that informs and enhances practice across colleges. The addition of these three scholars marks another step forward in strengthening evidence-based innovation and leadership within the sector.
Jamie Pearson, Senior Lecturer in Education and Training, Darlington College said: “I am delighted to have been chosen as one of the Research Further scholars this year, the funding will really help reduce the stress of PhD research. However, more important to me is the network of FE practitioner researchers and expertise that the scholarship provides access to. Research can be a lonely pursuit, so the thought of having a network of people to share, collaborate and work with is an exciting opportunity.”
David Gartland, CEO and Principal, Darlington College said: "We are delighted to have supported Jamie in his application for the Research Further Scholarship. Jamie is a valued member of the teaching team and it is fantastic that as a scholar of this scheme he will be able to contribute and influence changes in policy and practise."
Will Baldwin, Principal, Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College said: “We are delighted that Angie has been chosen to join Research Further, her background in psychology and her passion for inclusive teaching and learning make her a perfect candidate, building on the research she has already undertaken and shared with the sector”
Angela Fantis, Teacher, Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College said: “I am honoured to be selected as an AoC Research Scholar, bringing together my love of research and teaching to explore inclusion in FE and sixth-form education, a field I am deeply committed to. This exciting role allows me to work with colleagues across the sector, contribute to the growing body of research, and help drive meaningful change for learners and educators alike.
Beth Wolstenhome, PDBA Programme Manager, Leeds City College said: “It is an honour to be selected as a scholar and join Research Further. I am excited about my research and grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to FE research. I can't wait to get started.”
David Henderson, Head of Department – School of Business, Events and Accounting said: "This is a tremendous opportunity for Beth, who already plays a hugely important role through her leadership of our pastoral and English and maths teams, and her vital work in safeguarding students. Receiving this funding allows her to address the pressing trauma and safeguarding challenges young people face in further education. I am confident that she will make a significant impact as an AOC Scholar."
Julia Belgutay, Head of Communications, Media, Marketing and Research, Association of Colleges, said: "We are delighted to welcome Jamie, Angela and Beth to the Research Further programme. Their work represents the very best of what further education can achieve, driven by curiosity, grounded in practice, and focused on real-world impact. This research will not only strengthen our sector, but also inspire innovation and leadership across colleges nationwide.”
