Stand-out performances from all regions at National Championships

The 41st National Championships saw some superb performances across all the regions. So we have picked out some of the highlights from each region:

South East

The South East retained the Wilkinson Sword for the third year in a row and won medals in 17 events across the Championships. Highlights include:

• Farnborough Sixth Form College’s women’s basketball team reaching the National Championships for the first time and winning gold.
• Zak Mohamed from Itchen College following in his brother’s footsteps to win gold in men’s cross country.
• Perry Malik from Richard Collyer’s for winning a hugely competitive squash final played at an extremely high standard.

South West

• SGS women’s rugby team entering the regional tournaments and competing at National Championships for the first time and winning silver.
• Alex Elwick, from Yeovil College played a couple of brilliant rounds and came second in the men’s golf tournament.
• Petroc volleyball's men's team finishing in the top three for the fourth year in a row.

East

• The men’s cross country team winning gold. An individual bronze from Oliver Newman from Hills Road College.
• Another stand-out result was the Hills Road women’s hockey team winning a bronze medal.

London

• New VIc’s cricket team finishing runners-up for the second year in a row.
• The London tennis team made up of students from Barnet and Southgate and Kingston College finishing second for the second year running.
• It was the first year that London was represented in the women’s golf competition, with Chloe Wilson from Barnet and Southgate College picking up vital Wilkinson Sword points.

North East

• Middlesbrough College’s Michael May winning gold in the men’s golf, building on a successful performance at the AoC Sport Open Golf Championships 2019.
• East Durham College, competing in the National Championships for the first time, representing the North East in the pan-disability football, finished sixth overall.

Yorkshire & Humber

• New College Pontefract standout performances in women’s and men’s squash, coming first and second respectively.
• Shipley College, who won bronze in the pan-disability football, having missed out on a medal by two points at the National Championships in 2018. A team who rarely competes overcoming the odds to get themselves onto the podium.

North West

• The tennis team from Cardinal Newman, Lancaster & Morecambe, Riverside and Winstanley have worked together to win the competition at National Championships for the past two years. The students have worked really well together and managed each of their fixtures.
• The women’s cross country team, made up of Runshaw, Carmel, Cardinal Newman and Xaverian, have finished in second place at the last three Championships.

West Midlands

• Newcastle Stafford College Group women's volleyball winning gold and the AoC Sport Team of the Year Award, sponsored by Matrix Fitness.
• Stoke-on-Trent winning men's basketball for the second year running and haven't lost a game for two years

East Midlands

• Tresham College football team winning gold without conceding any goals at the Championships.
• Lincoln College therapy students providing athletes with professional recovery support, injury prevention and injury management throughout the weekend.

Wales

The Welsh contingent of approximately 200 students had one of their best ever Championships

• Women’s rugby – gold
• Women’s hockey – silver
• Women’s cross country – bronze in the team event and individual bronze for Holly Roberts (Coleg Cambria)
• Men’s table tennis – silver
• Some notable fourth places, including women’s football and pan-disability football
