Social Mobility Commission report 'State of the Nation'

14th December 2017

Responding to the Social Mobility Commission's State of the Nation report on social mobility in Britain, David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges (AoC), said: “Colleges are vital to better social mobility. They provide a broad mix of academic and technical education as well as apprenticeship training that helps young people get a great start in life. They need to be supported more to work with adults in our post-Brexit economy and labour market if we are to have a country that works for everyone. “Colleges are central to the Government’s post-16 reforms with new technical qualifications providing a cornerstone to build distinctive courses that meet the needs of employers, students and the economy. “AoC believes that many small school sixth forms do not offer young people the choice and breadth of high-quality education and training they deserve. That's why we want the Government to carry out targeted reviews of post-16 provision in schools as they have done for colleges through area reviews.”
