From learner to role model: Deonne’s story

Calderdale College

After several years away from education, 44-year-old Deonne Facey made the daunting decision to return to the classroom, while also balancing childcare responsibilities and family commitments.

Having been out of full-time employment for some time, Deonne was determined to make a change. She wanted to build a better future for herself and her children, return to work and show that it is never too late to take a different path.

She enrolled on a Level 3 Coaching and Mentoring course at Calderdale College through the Free Courses for Jobs initiative, but simply walking through the college doors on her first day was a huge psychological step.

The first few weeks were difficult. She struggled with her confidence, felt ‘old in a young student environment’ and regularly worried about the quality of her course work. Gradually, that began to change. With the support of the college and through her own determination, Deonne went from strength to strength.

Deonne became an inspiration to fellow students, encouraging others to step outside their comfort zones and believe in their own potential. Her achievements were recognised when she was named Adult Student of the Year 2025/26 at the college-wide Inspire Awards, with her children there to see her receive the award.

Deonne’s newfound confidence gave her the belief to return to the world of work. While still studying, Deonne applied for a role with a Huddersfield-based charity. During the recruitment process, the organisation recognised that her skills and experience were particularly well suited to another position and offered her an alternative role.

Today, Deonne is using what she has learnt to support young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), helping them recognise their strengths, rebuild their confidence and explore opportunities for employment and personal development.

Her journey demonstrates the powerful ripple effect adult education can have. An opportunity to return to learning helped Deonne rebuild her confidence, gain new skills and move back into employment. She has become a role model for her children and her community, and she is now using her own experience to help young people overcome barriers and see new possibilities for their lives.

Deonne’s story shows why adult education is about far more than qualifications. At its best, it gives people a second chance, unlocks potential that might otherwise go unrealised and enables people not only to change their own lives, but to make a difference to the lives of others.
