A journey of resilience: Dan's story

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG)

For much of his adult life, Dan Hawkins faced emotional, social and financial challenges, but returning to education at the age of 31 marked the beginning of a new chapter. Through determination, resilience and a commitment to personal growth, he has transformed his circumstances and unlocked his academic potential.

Dan was already familiar with college life, having previously studied A Levels at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, where he achieved exceptional A* and A grades before progressing to the University of Warwick. However, while at university, he began experiencing significant personal challenges that ultimately led him to withdraw from his course.

During this difficult period, Dan was diagnosed with depression and later received an autism diagnosis. These experiences prompted a journey of self-reflection, helping him develop a deeper understanding of his mental health, learning needs and future aspirations.

Rather than allowing these setbacks to define him, Dan made the courageous decision to enrol on a part-time evening Access to HE diploma (health professionals) at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG).

From the moment he joined the programme, Dan became a valued member of the classroom community. His willingness to openly discuss his own experiences helped create a supportive learning environment, enriching conversations around mental health and giving fellow students a greater understanding of challenges they may encounter in their future careers within health and social care.

Academically, Dan’s achievements have been remarkable. Throughout the intensive fast-track diploma, he achieved Distinction grades in every module, every unit and every subject, earning an incredible total of 45 Distinctions. His tutors describe him as exceptionally hardworking, self-aware and committed to excellence, often spending hours refining and perfecting his work.

Yet Dan’s impact extends far beyond his grades.

As class representative, he became a passionate advocate for student wellbeing, helping to bring mental health awareness to the forefront of discussions and enrichment activities. He acted as an important link between staff and learners, ensuring the voices of his classmates were heard and represented. Many students on the part-time diploma balanced their studies alongside employment and family responsibilities. Dan’s support, empathy and leadership helped create a positive and encouraging environment where everyone could succeed. His peers consistently looked to him as a role model, not only for the quality of his academic work but for the kindness, compassion and humility he showed every day. Through sharing his experiences and encouraging open conversations about mental health, he helped classmates develop a broader understanding of wellbeing and its importance in both everyday life and professional practice.

Recently, Dan left NSCG with ambitious plan for the future. Inspired by his studies in psychology and neuroscience, he is now at the University of Staffordshire studying psychology part-time. Recognising the importance of balancing study with his personal wellbeing, he has chosen a pathway that works for him, demonstrating the self-awareness and maturity that have become hallmarks of his success. His long-term ambitions include completing a master’s degree and ultimately pursuing a PhD in psychology and research science, with a particular focus on improving understanding of mental health and supporting vulnerable people in society.

Dan’s journey demonstrates the life-changing power of adult education. Through courage, determination and the support of further education, he has transformed personal adversity into academic excellence and a clear vision for the future. His story is a reminder that education can provide not only qualifications, but confidence, purpose and the opportunity to change lives.
