- Finding confidence, opportunity and purpose: Tim’s story
Finding confidence, opportunity and purpose: Tim’s story
Coastland College
Throughout his life, Tim Colebrooke has faced challenges that could easily have limited his opportunities. Born 10 weeks prematurely and later diagnosed with moderate sensorineural hearing loss and ADHD, he encountered barriers to learning from an early age. Yet through determination, resilience, and the opportunities provided by education, Tim has continued to challenge expectations and build a brighter future for himself.
After attending mainstream education, Tim moved to a specialist provision at the age of 10 and became a residential student at Exmouth Deaf Academy. Living and learning away from home was a significant step, helping him develop independence, self-confidence and the ability to advocate for himself. These experiences laid important foundations, but it was his return to learning as an adult that enabled him to take the next step in achieving his ambitions.
Since joining Coastland College in 2024 at the age of 20, Tim has successfully completed the Routes into Employment programme and has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving his skills and broadening his opportunities.
One of Tim's most significant achievements has been his persistence in developing his maths skills. After initially missing out on the qualification he was aiming for, he refused to let the setback define him. Instead, he used it as motivation to continue learning, enrolling on a Level 1 functional skills maths course and successfully achieving the qualification through hard work, dedication and perseverance. He is now working towards Level 2, opening up further opportunities for progression.
Alongside his studies, Tim is also undertaking a British Sign Language qualification and maintaining part-time employment. Balancing work and learning demonstrates not only his commitment to self-development but also the confidence and independence he has gained through education.
The impact of learning can also be seen in the way Tim has become an active and influential member of the college community. As a member of the Student Leadership Team, he represents the views of his peers and helps shape decisions that affect student life. His willingness to speak up, contribute ideas and support others reflects the confidence he has developed through his educational journey.
Tim has also played an important role in delivering Deaf Awareness training to staff. By sharing his experiences as a deaf learner, he has helped colleagues better understand the barriers some students face and how inclusive practices can make a meaningful difference. Through this work, Tim is not only benefiting from education himself but is helping to create a more inclusive learning environment for others.
Today, Tim is a positive role model for fellow learners. His journey demonstrates that adult education is about far more than gaining qualifications. It can provide a second chance, build confidence, develop independence and open doors that may once have seemed out of reach.
