Work placement leads to dream opportunity for B&FC T Level student

Tyson Employer Shot

Amelia Bux is one step closer to landing her dream job after being awarded a merit in the Design, Surveying and Planning T Level at Blackpool and The Fylde College.

The 17-year-old student, who enjoys playing the piano and travelling, hopes to be a quantity surveyor – and is well en route thanks to employer Tyson Construction, who took her on a work placement as part of her course.

She said: “Tyson will be taking me on for my Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship so I’m really happy right now. Tyson is a really good company and I hope they want to keep me on in the end!

“My placement with Tyson was great - I went on lots of site visits. I saw what the project managers did, I went into the office with quantity surveyors and did some costings with the architects.”

Amelia had started doing A-Levels at a sixth form but found it was too much written work and wanted a more practical option, to give her a much better understanding of what happens in the real world of work.

Philip Helm, Business Development Director at Tyson said: “Amelia stood out from the beginning through her attitude, ability and maturity. She impressed colleagues across the business and quickly demonstrated that she had the potential for a career in quantity surveying.

“The stand-out moment was deciding, while Amelia was still completing her placement, that we wanted to offer her a permanent position.”

From September, she will spend four days a week with Tyson and one day at the University of Lancashire.
