AoC responds to Sir David Bell's review into antisemitism in schools and colleges
Responding to Sir David Bell’s review into antisemitism in schools and colleges in England, David Hughes, Chief Executive, Association of Colleges, said: "I'm glad to see the publication of David Bell's report being taken so seriously by the government. Colleges across the country work tirelessly to ensure they are inclusive, welcoming and safe learning environments for all. As events across the country and around the world continue to impact communities, colleges will welcome additional support to help them maintain environments where all students and staff can feel safe, respected and able to learn.
"I totally agree that education needs to play a crucial role in prevention, and that teachers across all phases of education need practical tools and support on how to discuss antisemitism with students. These tools cannot be one-size-fits-all, and there needs to be resources for both schools and colleges which are appropriate to students' age, context and experience.
"Many colleges are already demonstrating excellent practice in bringing people together, promoting mutual understanding and supporting community cohesion. The opportunity now is to build on and share that good practice more consistently across the country, ensuring that colleges have access to approaches that are proven to work in their local communities.
"We acknowledge the recommendations in the report aimed specifically at colleges, and we will engage with and support our members as they work through these, helping them to strengthen inclusion, foster positive relationships and ensure that all students and staff remain safe."
