- Student mobility: what you need to know about sport scholarships
Student mobility: what you need to know about sport scholarships
The UK government’s International Education Strategy has set a target of £40 billion a year in education exports by 2030, highlighting the importance of global student mobility and international study opportunities. While programmes such as Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme are well known routes, US sport scholarships are emerging as another valuable option for talented student-athletes looking to study abroad while continuing their sporting careers.
Getting a sport scholarship in the USA starts with getting recruited. Keystone Sports is Europe's leading college recruitment brand, specialising in securing US sport scholarships for international athletes. As an official partner of the Association of Colleges (AoC), we've helped thousands of young athletes through the recruitment process to secure scholarships and study and compete in America.
A sport scholarship is a financial award given to an athlete as part of the university recruiting process. This aims to help the athlete cover the cost of studying in America and includes everything from tuition, books and school materials, accommodation and all the sport equipment. Sport scholarships are not only awarded to domestic students – international students, including UK athletes, are eligible to receive them as well.
Sport scholarships can be a full scholarship (often called a "full ride") or a partial scholarship. They’re available for a wide range of sports and for both men and women, including football, swimming, golf, rugby, athletics (track and field), tennis, rowing, and many more. The best thing about American college sports is that there is a level for everyone. The system is divided into different divisions: NCAA I-III, NAIA, and JUCO. This multi-division system means opportunities exist for athletes at different levels, not only those competing at the very top of their sport. Thanks to this, international student athletes can find programmes that match both their academic goals and athletic development.
Studying abroad is a life-changing experience that broadens students’ horizons and opens doors to incredible opportunities. With a sport scholarship, they get financial support to make this dream a reality. The other benefits include:
Top-class training facilities and coaching: American universities invest heavily in their athletic programmes. Student athletes in the USA train in facilities right on campus with professional coaches who are dedicated to helping them develop and progress.
Continue competing at a high level: in the US college system, students can be high performing both in the classroom and on the field. They have daily training sessions and compete regularly throughout the academic year.
Experience a new culture: living and studying in America exposes international students to a completely different culture and way of life. They’ll make friends from all around the world, from different backgrounds, and gain an international perspective.
Build an international network: the connections international student-athletes make extend far beyond graduation. Teammates, coaches, and other athletes from the same school often become lifelong friends and valuable professional contacts.
Gain an internationally recognised degree: American universities are amongst the best in the world. This gives students a competitive edge – whether they choose to work in the UK, the USA, or anywhere else in the world.
Develop independence and confidence: moving abroad to study and compete requires courage and self-reliance. Student athletes from around the globe return home more independent, confident, and capable. These are qualities that will serve them well in every aspect of life!
Teaches invaluable life skills: college sports experience helps students gain skills in planning, organisation, and handling multiple commitments. These time management skills aren’t just useful during their studies but highly impressive to future employers.
However, US universities understand this challenge, which is why student-athletes have access to dedicated resources including academic advisors, tutors, and support staff to help them manage everything effectively.
Keystone Sports offer a free, no-obligation scholarship assessment where our team reviews athletes’ academic profile and athletic level, explains the US college pathway, and answers any questions about the recruitment process. This helps students, families, and schools understand what options may be available.
Every year, hundreds of UK student-athletes receive life-changing scholarship offers to attend American universities while continuing their sport. With the right guidance, many more could follow the same path.
