Ice Skating
Ice Skating is a dynamic and exciting sport that combines athleticism, technical skill and artistic expression. Whether competing in figure skating, synchronised skating or speed skating disciplines, athletes develop balance, coordination and confidence while performing on the ice.
The sport welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, offering opportunities for recreational enjoyment as well as competitive progression. Success relies on dedication, technique and creativity, making ice skating a rewarding challenge for both new and experienced athletes.
British Ice Skating is the recognised governing body for ice skating in the United Kingdom. It supports clubs, coaches and athletes across all disciplines, delivering competitions and participation programmes while providing pathways from grassroots skating through to international representation on the world stage.
Lets Skate.
Let’s Skate is an exciting project delivered by British Ice Skating and funded by Sport England, designed to create opportunities for disabled people to get involved in ice skating. Whether participating on the ice, volunteering, coaching or officiating, the programme aims to make the sport more accessible to everyone. As part of the project, ice rinks across the UK will be supported to deliver inclusive skating sessions led by qualified coaches.
British Ice Skating will share the impact and success of the Let’s Skate project to celebrate achievements and inspire more people to experience ice skating. Through the project, new opportunities will continue to be developed, ensuring more people can enjoy and engage with the sport in a variety of ways.
Throughout the programme, British Ice Skating will work closely with rinks, coaches, officials, volunteers and skaters to gather feedback, helping to shape future initiatives and maximise the project's impact. The overall ambition is to create a welcoming, safe and accessible environment for all participants, while providing clear pathways into competition, volunteering, coaching and officiating.

British Ice Skating “Learn to Skate” App:
The new Skate UK mobile app is designed to engage/educate the skaters interests with video’s, descriptions, focus points & expectations for every skill in each level. This app will help guide the skater step by step through the entire learn to skate experience, it also includes a Dispensation model to make ice skating more accessible for skaters with disabilities, we believe Skate UK is for everyone! Ice Skating is a sport for life, and we want everyone to experience the joy of ice skating. In fact, British Ice Skating vision is "Skate for Gold, Skate for Fun, Skate for Life".
This app will lead you through the entire pathway from the very start whilst also offering other cool features, such as a “safe skate” video and a rink finder function etc.
Let's Skate Activators
British Ice Skating has recently launched the Let’s Skate Activator Scheme, an exciting volunteer programme designed to support Let’s Skate sessions across the country and help more people discover, enjoy and thrive in ice skating.
The scheme provides an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to get involved in the sport, whether they are passionate skaters, parents, aspiring coaches, or individuals looking to make a positive difference within their local community. Through the Activator Scheme, volunteers can develop new skills, gain valuable experience and play an important role in supporting the growth of Let’s Skate sessions across the UK.
As a Let’s Skate Activator, volunteers may:
- Support skaters both on and off the ice.
- Help prepare equipment and session areas.
- Assist with session organisation and participant support.
- Build positive relationships with skaters, families and local partners.
- Capture photos, videos and stories to help promote sessions.
- Contribute to creating a welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable environment for all participants.
In addition to supporting local delivery, Activators benefit from development opportunities, alongside rewards and recognition for achieving key milestones throughout their volunteering journey.
