David Hughes CBE, Chief Executive, Association of Colleges said: "We have been advocating for votes at 16- and 17-year-olds for many years precisely because we believe it will result in more young people becoming engaged in our participatory democracy.

“Colleges offer great support to young people to develop political literacy as part of their education and development as citizens. This change recognises the maturity and insight that 16- and 17-year-olds bring to the democratic process, and it places even greater importance on ensuring that civic education is embedded in the curriculum.

“Further education colleges are uniquely placed to help young people understand the responsibilities and opportunities of voting. We look forward to working with government, the Electoral Commission, and other partners to ensure that all newly enfranchised voters are supported to make informed choices and have their voices heard.”
