AoC Sport Ryder Cup Format turns Blue
This April saw the return of the AoC Sport Ryder Cup format competition return for its second year. After the South team won the inaugural trophy the North team had a point to prove as 24 players descended on Beeston Fields Golf Club in Nottingham.
Both teams were made up from the best six available GROSS players and the best six available NETT players from the two AoC Sport Qualifiers earlier in the year. The South team was led by Mark Wheeler (Itchen College) and Matt Ellis (Hartpury College) and the North team was led by Rich Miller (Durham Sixth Form) as both teams battled it out with 24 points to play for.
The day started off with Fourballs better ball for the first 9 holes. After a flying start for the South team going 3-0 up the tail end of the Northern boys pulled it back to 3-3.
Following this was a Foursome alternate shots in the same pairings for the back 9. After a toughly fought match the scores again were 3-3 meaning the teams went into the singles dead level on 6-6. The race to 12.5 was on.
After a few pairing changes the singles began in the afternoon for the final 9 holes just as the weather took a turn for the worse. The large down pour of rain suited the North team as the front pack took an early lead in the singles claiming 3 points. A South fight back was on managing to half a few holes and gain the odd victory but the Northerners hung on and came through with an overall majority winning the cup 13.5-10.5.
After a fantastic day and a great advert for college golf the North team take home the cup for a year as the South will start to prepare their fightback for next seasons event.
