RESOURCE | England - Technical Excellence Colleges

14 May 2026

Technical Excellence Colleges (TECs) are a central part of the UK government’s Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper, which sets out plans to create a more specialised, employer-led technical education system in England.

The white paper positions TECs as centres of excellence within further education, focused on priority growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, digital technology, defence, and construction. Their ambition is not only to equip learners with the high-level technical skills needed for well-paid jobs, but also to strengthen local economies by working closely with employers, strategic authorities, and industry partners. Through a proposed “hub and spoke” model, TECs are intended to share expertise, facilities, and teaching practice across regions, helping to raise standards across the wider FE sector. This guide explores the government’s vision for TECs, the role they are expected to play in England’s industrial strategy, and how this increasingly specialised approach compares with technical and vocational education systems in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
