Colleges in Place: Leadership, Collaboration and Community

Across The College Alliance nations, colleges are deeply rooted in the places they serve. Alongside their core role in delivering high-quality education and skills, they act as long-term public assets that support health, tackle inequalities and strengthen communities. Building on previous College Alliance discussions on people and productivity, this conference turns its focus to the role of place.

Colleges shape opportunity and support inclusive local outcomes, making them central to the social and civic fabric of their areas. This conference will explore how leadership at all levels can support colleges to work within more joined-up and responsive systems, fulfilling their role as place-based leaders. As governance and public service delivery continue to evolve, and with growing emphasis on devolution and regionalisation, we will examine how colleges operate within these place-based systems. In particular, we will consider how principals, senior teams and governing bodies position their institutions within local ecosystems, working in partnership with public services, communities and policymakers.

Drawing on international perspectives and comparative research, the event will highlight practical examples of how colleges are delivering long-term social impact within their local areas.

Hosted in the Glasgow City Region, six months on from the Holyrood elections, the conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on how colleges can work effectively across local, regional and national systems.
