The Maths and English Funding Condition
19th June 2019
The DFE announced on Thursday that the funding condition for 16 to 18-year-olds who don’t have GCSE Maths and English at grade C will be tightened in 2015. In 2014-15 colleges can enrol students with grade Ds on stepping stone qualifications if there is a clear education justification but in 2015-16 this flexibility will be removed. By 2017, DFE intends that GCSE will be the only option. This change comes into effect at the same time as GCSEs themselves are changing to set a higher standard. We have expressed our concern to the media about the impact of this change on students, particularly the cohorts who will be starting college in 2015 and 2016 and who will face a confusing choice between resitting an old qualification and taking a new one.
