Futures academy: re-engaging learners through choice and confidence

Milton Keynes College

Milton Keynes College developed the Futures Academy to support leaners who are identified as being at Level 1 or below and need additional support before they can progress onto further study or into the world of work. The curriculum covers core areas such as English, maths and digital skills, in addition to personal skills and behaviours to encourage engagement with education and build students’ confidence.

Students have the opportunity to study on either a specialist vocational pathway or study up to three blocks in different vocational specialisms, which offers a bespoke study programme for those needing support to decide on a future career. Students are able to access virtual work experience placements and employer opportunities.

The programme has resulted in an 175% enrolment against target, a 10% increase in retention and an increase in English and Maths achievement by 30%. This demonstrates the targeted work that colleges can play in preventing people at risk from becoming NEET and how initiatives can be highly successful in re-engaging and retaining them back into the education system.
