The Careers and Enterprise Company careers education and guidance award - North West Regional College Case Study

By creating a dedicated Careers Academy, the NWRC management team are tackling high levels of unemployment for students and the the wider community by offering work ready courses.

The initiative delivers careers education, advice, guidance, bespoke programmes, interactive workshops and a unique approach to growing students’ soft skills. Innovative team challenges enable assessment and identification of soft skill shortages such as problem solving, team working, critical thinking and communication. Team challenges include completing ‘Jenga’ blindfolded, allowing listening, communication, team working, problem solving and leadership skills to be assessed.

The impact for students is having a one stop careers support service ensuring successful progression into HE or employment: 462 job vacancies – 70% success rate; 842 students receiving one to one tailored career guidance; 93% progression into HE; and 166 students completed the ‘Go For It’ business set up workshop.

The Careers Academy also aims to reduce withdrawals in designated courses. Regular class visits and participation in mind-set workshops and workshops aimed at the student’s care/welfare/personal development, ensure a holistic approach.

The Careers Academy raises students’ aspirations and broadens horizons. High quality teaching and learning alongside an innovative support curriculum means our learners achieve the relevant soft and skill based qualifications required by universities and employers.
