National Star College provides education, support, and care for people with complex disabilities from across the UK. In response to the changing external environment, together with the increasing complexity of the young people National Star work with, meant we needed to further develop the way in which we supported students to gain the most from personalised learning programmes.
From September 2013 a change management programme was implemented and the college was restructured with a focus on wrap around support for learners. A new Directorate was formed to bring together education, support, therapies, and care in an integrated multidisciplinary team working around each learner. The new Learning Programmes Directorate brought together all personalised study programmes from Foundation Pathways to Vocational and Work Programmes. The support roles then ran across all the programmes with their leadership and management coming from one central team.
The impact of the project has been ground breaking. It has promoted exemplary and innovative teaching and learning and led to excellent student outcomes. New models of integrated practice are emerging, these are showcased at events such as FestABLE (www.festable.org). Student voice has strongly informed the way in which both the curriculum, and support is shaped with National Star once again, recognised as Ofsted Outstanding in 2018.
