Responding to the appointment of Alun Francis, Principal at Oldham College as the new Deputy Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, Chief Executive of Association of Colleges David Hughes said:
“I am delighted that Alun Francis has been appointed as Vice Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, it’s great to have a college leader taking such an influential role at the centre of government. College leaders like Alun are at the heart of advancing social mobility in communities across the country and I know he will bring a wealth of ideas and expertise to the position. The stark impact of the pandemic on education and opportunities for young people and adults from the most deprived areas has revealed this work is more important than ever. The appointment is a sign that colleges are becoming less of an afterthought to those in Whitehall, and are seen as an integral part of the education and skills ecosystem.”
