Marion Plant OBE - North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College

Name: Marion Plant OBE

Name and type of college: North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College

History of organisation: The college was formed on 1 August 2016 when federation partners North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Leicestershire College merged to join forces, sharing best practice, improving quality, and becoming ever more business efficient. Its five campuses are at the heart of their communities in South and West Leicestershire and North Warwickshire, serving the urban centres of Nuneaton, Hinckley and Wigston. Its geographical reach now spans the East and West Midlands from Coventry and Warwickshire to Leicester City and Leicestershire. North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College supports around 10,000 students in full and part time study, apprenticeships, higher education, professional courses and distance learning.

The College has been judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted with the behaviour and attitudes of its students rated as ‘Outstanding’ by inspectors. Following an inspection in September 2019, Ofsted judged that the college has successfully created an ‘enjoyable and highly inclusive learning environment’ with a curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of students, apprentices, employers and local enterprise partnerships.

The College sponsors the Midland Academies Trust, an independent charitable organisation which oversees the operation of four local secondary schools.

Experience to draw from: Marion has been a College Principal for 15 years.  She has strong experience of consistently securing ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgements.  She has set up and led a secondary school multi academy trust, which included the setting up and closure of two studio schools, and as a successful college federation leading into a full merger.  She has experienced and successfully managed FE Commissioner intervention in response to financial challenges – being quoted by the FE Commissioner team as the “fasted College in and out of intervention”.

Marion has led several significant capital projects including the highly successful delivery of the MIRA Technology Institute – an institute focussed on advanced training for the automotive sector in partnership with 3 local universities and a leading industry partner, was a Department for Education board member for 3 years and holds several national roles including as Deputy Chair for WorldSkills UK and is a board Director on Coventry and Warwickshire LEP.
