Training materials for clerks

The training materials on this page have been reviewed and updated and are intended to be of particular interest and use to clerks.  There are thirteen modules covering all aspects of governance, and a brief executive summary of each, setting out the main areas covered in the module.

There is also a set of training materials that have been developed for use by governors.

Module 1: Overview of the Further Education System

This module gives an overview of the further education system. It provides an updated description of the political and legislative environment and suggests further sources.

 

Module 2: Values and Ethical Framework

The purpose of this module is to explain the standards expected in governance, including the key principles and codes of conduct that have been adopted by most public bodies.

 

Module 3: The Main Statutory Framework

This module provides essential information about the legislative environment in which a college operates.

 

Module 4: Working Relationships

This module explores a range of models, theories and practical techniques for managing relationships with other people in a college.

 

Module 5: The Process of Effective Governance

This module considers how effective governing bodies function in the less regulated environment following the Education Act 2011.

 

Module 6: Strategy and Educational Character

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of responsibilities as they relate to the educational character of the college, its vision, mission, values and strategy.

 

Module 7: Collaboration and Partnerships

This module gives clerks an overview of the types of partnerships and collaborative arrangements that are possible in the further education sector.

 

Module 8: Curriculum

The purpose of this module is to give governors and clerks an overview of their responsibilities in terms of the curriculum.

 

Module 9: Quality & Standards

This module considers the responsibilities for monitoring the quality of all aspects of provision and for raising standards of student attainment.

 

Module 10 Finance

The purpose of this module is to enable clerks to better understand the college’s financial responsibilities, financial terminology, funding body requirements and other aspects of finance.

 

Module 11: Human Resources

This module explores the interface between governance and the HR function and the role of the clerk.

 

Module 12: The Audit Committee

This module provides an overview of the role of the audit committee, their responsibilities as audit committee members and how to make effective use of auditors.

 

Module 13: Governor Recruitment and Succession

The purpose of this module is to describe and explain the functions of a search or nomination committee, where such a committee has been established by a college.
