Di Roberts - Brockenhurst College

"A Principal for 14 years, I have been through many of the highs and lows of running a College..."

Name: Di Roberts CBE

Name and type of college: Brockenhurst Tertiary College

History of organisation: Brockenhurst college is a large Tertiary College in the New Forest. Located on the boundary of Hampshire and Dorset it serves a wide regional catchment area, with additional learning & skills centres in Christchurch and Southampton. Our breadth of curriculum covers academic, technical and vocational specialisms, including A Levels, BTECS, Apprenticeships and Higher Education. The College also has a strong reputation for supporting students with learning difficulties and disabilities, with over 140 students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The College has a thriving international provision with over 120 students studying full time from 25+ countries each year and longstanding partnership A level delivery in China.

Experience to draw from: A Principal for 14 years, I have been through many of the highs and lows of running a College. We were rated Ofsted Outstanding in 2004 & 2008 and then graded Good in 2017. The College took part in a pilot full Inspection for Ofsted last May using the new Framework. The College currently has a turnover of £21m. Following an inadequate financial heath rating for 2013/14, the College received a formal Financial Notice of Concern from the then Skills Funding Agency, which, following implementation of a robust recovery plan, was subsequently lifted within the designated time period. The College set up a shared services company in 2013 with Bournemouth & Poole College, which continues to deliver the majority of back office functions for both colleges. I have worked with 4 Chairs during my time as Principal – and think the make-up and management of the College Board is something that often catches a new Principal unawares.  An AoC Board Member for 6 years, I was Deputy Chair from 2013 to 2015. I currently chair the AoC SEND Policy Group and am a member of the ASCL FE and Post 16 Committee.

I am able to support you with:

  • Managing Ofsted
  • Financial recovery
  • Managing PR (specifically managing emerging situations)
  • Health & Safety Executive (specifically asbestos management)
  • Staffing restructures and staff relationships
  • Shared services
