Supporting students’ development and well-being through active and recognised involvement in the college community

A case study by The Sheffield College.

When the Youth Social Action ambassadors at The Sheffield College convened early in the academic year, it was clear that an issue they deeply care about was supporting fellow learners’ wellbeing. Students identified that many learners, especially those in their first year of Further Education, sometimes struggle to unwind outside of their studies and protect their mental wellbeing. They recognised that simply creating Wellbeing Spaces where students can sit at lunchtime and socialise in a smaller, supported environment would support this, as well as helping them to bond with other learners. These ‘Wellbeing Spaces’ were launched and ran weekly at both Hillsborough and City campuses. Students led all elements of creating and running these, including the decisions of what activities and resources to purchase for them, and the promotion of the spaces.
