Celebrating our community against the backdrop of division

A case study by the Northern School of Art.

Our ambassadors began their Youth Social Action project in the months following the riots across the country in August 2024, including in our town of Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough is the most ethnically diverse local authority area in the Tees Valley, with a British Minority Ethnic population of 17.6% (identified at Census 2021). This is an increase of 51% since 2011
and is projected to grow further, which comes with its own potential issues if work isn’t done on uniting our community and celebrating our differences. In the direct aftermath of the riots, this gave further credence to the media perception of a town that is divided and not somewhere that
embraces and celebrates its diversity which the ambassadors questioned especially given the welcoming, open environment of the School.
