City & Guild college engagement with employers award - City of Glasgow College Case Study

A partnership between CoGC and CalMac was established to provide Deck, Engine and Catering Ratings Apprenticeships, enabling succession planning and support of unique island communities and their economies.

The partnership links the college curriculum in areas both connected and not traditionally connected to maritime studies with a large Scottish employer, supporting island communities, recruiting young people from areas of multiple deprivations and ensuring the college benefits from up to date knowledge of current industry best practice.

Students go through a rigorous application and selection process and are able to earn while they are engaged in their course of study, as well as learn at a brand new, world-class learning facility while picking up the theoretical and practical skills they need for a career at sea.

The working relationship between the college and CalMac will be used as an example of best practice for our Industry Academy model and will be used as a template for similar collaborations in other subject areas, ensuring the best experience for all students in other faculties.

This project has deepened and enhanced the relationship between CoGC and CalMac and is providing high quality training to young people seeking careers at sea.
