British Council international award - New College Durham Case Study

Many of our students are from backgrounds lacking cultural diversity. As a result, one of New College Durham’s strategic objectives is for students to have an international experience as part of their programme.

One event our students take part in, in conjunction with our European partner colleges, is an International Trade Mission, held every year in a different European city. Our students have to approach local UK based companies who would like to trade internationally. The students then travel to the designated European city, work in collaboration with host country students to research prospective clients, and promote their product. The week concludes with a trade fair to promote the companies’ products to all contacts made during that week. This event not only provides real life experience of working internationally, but also develops other skillsets related to business acumen, which inspires students’ future careers.

New College Durham has been selected to host the Trade Mission next year. This will involve over fifty of our students, from a variety of subject areas. Our students will be responsible for organising and promoting the event, liaising and collaborating with students from other countries and helping them identify local companies to contact.
