AoC Skills and Education Group Award for social mobility and widening participation - Hart Learning Group Case Study

Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in November 2017, North Hertfordshire College’s (NHC’s) Supported Studies offers young people aged 16 to 24 years specialist, discrete provision for those with higher needs. Teaching is tailored to each individual’s personal and professional goals and allows them to move on to higher level courses or employment, as well as a chance to develop independent living and employability skills.

NHC’s Supported Studies courses are run by a team of highly experienced staff who get the best out of their students. 97.3% of our students achieve positive progression including 75.4% who progress to higher level or diplomas in Supported Studies courses.

In 2017/18, we created a trailblazing inclusive apprenticeship model in partnership with Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) and Herts County Council (HCC), leading to the successful employment of one of our Supported Studies students on an apprenticeship.
We have a three-year strategy to meet the longer term aspirations of our students and regularly review demand and research viable routes in line with the Government Skills Plan to evolve and sustain our offer. We look to double our supported internships programme in 2018/19.
