AoC Mental Health and Wellbeing Award - Weston College Case Study

Weston College has undertaken a college wide organisational transformation to enhance the mental health, wellbeing and welfare of its learners, its staff and its community.

The college has invested in its Mental Health, Wellbeing and Welfare Services through specialist staff/CPD e.g. a dedicated mental health team, the use of technology ‘Big White Wall’ and interdepartmental linkage via a framework of ‘Body and Mind’ initiatives, offering students/staff seamless holistic support across a whole college/community model.

Increased engagement with mental health, wellbeing and welfare support (4,447 learners), with 92% of students stating that the support offered has helped them stay at college and achieve. The college’s ‘Body and Mind’ initiatives engaged 1534 learners/staff tackling a range of issues from low self-esteem, confidence building, friendship circles, smoking cessation etc.

The work has led to the creation of ‘Wellfest’, an annual student mental health, wellbeing, welfare event (linked to induction) and community partnerships continue to engage those hardest to reach e.g. the ‘Us Girls, Body and Mind’ initiative designed to increase female physical activity focusing on young women (16-25) from deprived areas.

Due to the impact of its work, it is the only UK college to be awarded a place on the Young Minds ‘Amplified Trailblazer’ program.
