AoC Summer Reception 2010 - John Hayes MPHouse of Commons Select Committees

Select Committees are established by Parliament after each General Election to shadow the work of each Government department. The Committees are free to decide which areas of policy they investigate and produce about five reports each year. Following the changes to the Machinery of Government in June 2007 new Committees were established to monitor the work of the two new Government departments.

You can now read AoC Submissions to Select Committee enquiries online.

The last witness is usually the responsible Minister. Once the report is published Government is obliged to respond within two months however they are under no obligation to do what the Committee recommends.
