The father of DNA fingerprinting, a television design guru, a leading equality campaigner and one half of comedy duo Dick and Dom are among those today (12 June) awarded 2008 Gold Awards.
The AoC Charitable Trust presents the Gold Awards to just six recipients each year, to recognise the vital role of further education in the careers of the winners, and their continuing achievements in their chosen fields.
The winners of this year’s Gold Awards, presented by the AoC Charitable Trust at a special House of Commons ceremony are:
· Gok Wan, fashion consultant and television presenter, nominated by Leicester College
· Sir Alec Jeffreys, scientist and inventor of DNA profiling, nominated by Luton Sixth Form College
· Richard McCourt, of comedy due Dick and Dom, nominated by The Sheffield College
· Justine Whittaker, 2007 Nurse of the Year, nominated by Craven College
· Baroness Jane Campbell, Commissioner and Disability Committee Chair at The Commission for Equality and Human Rights, nominated by Hereward College
· Andrew Iveson, managing director of SIAS engineering and construction firm, nominated by Leeds College of Building
Alice Thiagaraj, Manager of the AoC Charitable Trust, said;
“Colleges from around the country have seized the opportunity to nominate students who went on to excel in their chosen field after benefiting from further education. This year’s winners highlight the positive contribution that colleges and their alumni make to life in the UK.”
