Colleges welcome new HE campus announcement

Event Title

03 March 2008

Commenting on Government announcements that it is to invite proposals to create new and expanded institutions in the next six years, AoC Director of Learning and Quality Maggie Scott said:

"Colleges would be well placed to host new higher education centres, now that they have foundation degree awarding powers and the opportunity to accredit qualifications for employers. Around 200,000 students study HE in colleges already and 292 colleges provide HE.

"This announcement is a recognition by Government that the market needs to be opened up and that a more responsive approach to community requirements should be taken - which is where colleges come in. We should view this 'New University Challenge' as an opportunity to provide more higher education where people want it, when they want it.

"AoC and colleges are looking forward to helping Government shape the detail of how these proposals might work in practice."
