AoC comments on 'Can't Read Can't Write'

Event Title

22 July 2008

Commenting on the issues raised by the new Channel Four series on adult literacy - 'Can't Read, Can't Write' - Maggie Scott, AoC Director of Learning and Quality, said:

“College adult literacy courses help millions of people boost their earning power, improve their career prospects, strengthen family and community ties or move on to further learning.

“Adult literacy staff with specialist, high level qualifications work hard to open up these opportunities for students, many of whom have had difficult experiences with education in the past.

“It is a success story for institutions as well as individuals. Colleges and other learning providers have met their 2010 skills for life targets two years early. Over 2.25 million adults have now gained their first qualifications.”
