1    AoC Beacon Awards - post election update

Since the outcome of the general election in May, there have been announcements regarding some of the sponsors who are involved with the AoC Beacon Awards this year and there have been enquiries from several Colleges who have been uncertain whether some of the awards will continue.

This briefing is to confirm that there will be no change to the awards available.  The Beacon Awards office has been given assurance from the sponsors involved that they are fully committed to the awards programme for this year and Colleges are encouraged to apply for these awards in the usual way.

The Awards which Colleges have been particularly concerned about are:

The Becta Award for Efficiency through the Effective Use of Technology in FE and Skills
The DCSF (now DfE) Award for Successful Delivery of Level 2 and 3 Qualifications
The DCSF (now DfE)/BIS/AoC Award for Smarter Procurement

If Colleges have any queries regarding the Awards, please contact Alice Thiagaraj on the number below.

2    AoC Beacon Awards 2010/2011 Programme

The closing date for this year's AoC Beacon Awards is Wednesday 7 July 2010 so there is now just under one month before the deadline for receipt of applications.  Further copies of the   AoC Beacon Awards Prospectus 2010/2011were sent to all liaison officers two weeks ago and further hard copies can be requested, if required.

The team of Beacon and sponsor assessors took part in a successful training day at the end of May and they are now all looking forward to receiving your applications.  As part of the assessment process, the assessors have been asked to complete detailed selection analysis forms on each submission to aid the evaluation process as well as providing invaluable feedback to Colleges putting in a submission.  If your College is engaged in work which you are particularly proud of and you feel deserves wider recognition and replication throughout the rest of the sector, it is really worth sending in an application; even if you are unsuccessful, the feedback should be able to assist you in putting forward a stronger bid in future years.

If you would like any advice on putting together your submission; particularly if you want any tips on how to anonymise your bid this year, or if you would like any feedback from last year's applications, then please do call Alice Thiagaraj on the number below.
