This one day workshop will examine the key issues which arise for FE institutions in managing both staff and students who misuse social media tools and the risks this presents. The course will explore the legal framework you need to be aware of, including issues such as bullying and harassment, duty of care and confidentiality. There will also be guidance on how to best manage the risks and take appropriate action. Difficult issues such as freedom of speech and expression and the distinctions between home and work boundaries will be discussed.

Objectives of the day

  • To illustrate the importance of having appropriate procedures in place
  • To show you how to minimise risk to the College
  • To clarify the degree to which action can be taken against staff or students for social media misuse on and off campus

  • A knowledge of the various legal issues relevant to social media misuse
  • An understanding of the risks to the College if appropriate procedures are not in place

  • Staff responsible for the implementation or review of disciplinary and grievance procedures or policies on the access and use of social media
