AoC National Pay Negotiations 2010

Event Title

Publication date: 18 May 2010

The Association of Colleges and the trade unions* of the Further Education National Joint Forum met on 17 May for the first time regarding the 2010/11 pay claim. The unions’ pay claim consisted of a 3.5% pay increase, with a minimum rise of £1,000, in salaries and allowances from 1 August 2010 plus a number of additional elements.

Evan Williams, AoC Employment Director, said: “The employers drew attention to the  significant funding pressures being faced by Colleges and the uncertainty relating to future funding. AoC informed the trade unions that it had carried out extensive research with member Colleges as to what they believed to be an affordable pay recommendation for 2010/11. There was a strong view within the membership in support of a pay freeze -  however Colleges also want to make some form of award to staff. AoC tabled a pay recommendation of 0.2% non-consolidated as a part of a package approach to the pay claim. This was rejected by the trade unions.

“Both sides want to keep the discussions going. It was agreed that the officers of the National Joint Forum, both from the trade unions’ and employers’ sides, would further explore aspects of both the pay claim and the recommendation before reporting back to the National Joint Forum in July.”
