Self regulation

Self regulation

In a speech to the 2006 AoC Annual conference, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills issued a challenge to the further education sector to take collective responsibility for its own future destiny and reputation and thus forge a new relationship with Government.

Since that time, the AoC have played a key role in the development of a proposition for self regulation through the activities of the Self Regulation Implementation Group (SRIG) and its project team.  The group developed the proposition, ‘Realising Self Regulation in the Further Education – Phase 2’, outlining the sector’s vision for self regulation, and delivered it to the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills on 16 November 2007. The proposition and a response from the Minister can be viewed and downloaded from the FE self regulation website.

The AoC will have an ongoing role in the development of self regulation as a member of the Single Voice for Self Regulation (for Further Education).

Self regulation in the FE sector

Self regulation offers a vision of a further education sector comprising respected, autonomous, demand-led organisations acting both individually and collectively within a self regulation system, delivering high quality, responsive provision for the benefit of learners, employers, communities and the nation, and operating as a respected and trusted partner of government.

The Single Voice for self regulation (for further education)

The Single Voice for Self Regulation represents the sector in strategic dialogue with government on regulatory matters. It represents and supports providers in interpreting and responding to regulatory directives set by government and national agencies, while in doing so, accepting and recognising the distinctive voices of representative bodies from different parts of the sector. It is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the framework for self regulation and developing a rolling programme of activity for this purpose.
