AoC has launched the "Ticket to Progress" campaign to achieve affordable and accessible travel for 16-19 students.
The Education and Skills Bill currently being debated in Parliament raises the education leaving age to 18. This will place new demands on local authorities and public transport operators which need to be properly addressed and therefore presents Government with the challenge of ensuring choice is available to all young people.
AoC is campaigning to introduce a concessionary travel pass allowing 16 - 19 students to travel on all local public transport across the country to:
• ensure all learners, regardless of family income or local circumstances, are able to access learning and the opportunities it brings;
• remove barriers preventing some young people being able to access the course and learning centre that they need in order to achieve their learning goals;
• ensure the success of Government’s aim for all young people to remain in education and training until the age of 18;
• ensure the successful roll-out of the Diploma requiring students to travel between schools, colleges and employers to gain their qualification;
• allow colleges to spend the maximum amount of their resources on teaching and learning;
• encourage young people to use public transport thereby reducing the environmental impact of private vehicles and also the numbers of young people involved in road traffic accidents;
• tackle the social isolation and the barriers faced in accessing social activities.
