Student of the Year Award - Deadline extended until Friday 12 October

The AoC Student of the Year Award 2012 open for entries

Now in its sixth year, the award seeks to celebrate the successes of College students from across the country.

We are placing a particular emphasis on students whose academic, vocational or extra-curricular achievements are truly remarkable and deserve recognition on a national stage. As always the awards will be central to the AoC Annual Conferences' showcase of College student talent.

The award ceremony will take place at the prestigious AoC Annual Conference Gala Dinner on Wednesday 21 November.

Who can enter?

While we realise that it is very hard to choose one individual from all those who deserve recognition in your College, entries must be limited to one student per institution to allow fair judging.

We would recommend that PR and marketing teams co-ordinate their College's entry, as participation in the competition is often used to promote the College locally.

The Student of the Year nominations are only open to AoC member Colleges.

Key dates

Open for entries – Friday 7 September

Entries close – Friday 12 October

Finalists announced – mid-October

Winner announced – Wednesday 21 November

Prizes

• The three finalists will receive return travel to Birmingham and accommodation for the night of the gala dinner for themselves and a guest
• Finalists will share in a total prize pool of £2,000

2011 Finalists

Joint 1st prize: Keith Southern, 55 – enrolled on the National Diploma in MusicTechnology at Mid Cheshire College 38 years after leaving school with no qualifications, and is training to be a teacher.

Joint 1st prize: Sabyha Khan, 18 – led the successful public speaking team at Uxbridge College and achieved high grades at A-level to fulfil her ambition to study Medicine at Cambridge University.

2nd prize: Joe Panasiuk, 18 – an exceptional enterprise student, young entrepreneur and teenage volunteer, Joe is a role model for his younger sister who he cares for following their mother’s death.

3rd prize: Mahamed Awale, 16 – a dedicated UK Youth MP and entrepreneur, ambitious A-level student Mahamed recently appeared on the BBC’s Young Apprentice show with Sir Alan Sugar.

On receiving his award, joint first prize winner, Keith Southern, said: “I have won a national BTEC award but this is even bigger. It’s absolutely fantastic. I didn’t expect it. I just wish that my return to education had happened when I was a younger man.”

Joint first prize winner, Sabyha Khan, said: “I’m quite shocked at the moment – it’s a real honour and a huge award to win. I’m surprised. I am just getting started at university and into my course. It’s hard work.”
