South Nottingham College Student Scoops East Midlands FE Sports Volunteer of the Year Award 2010

Event Title

Publication date: 28 July 2010

A very impressive selection of applications were received for this years award which has been supported by AoC East Midlands, EMDA and England Hockey. Colleges from across the region were asked to put students forward for the award in order to recognise all their hard work in the voluntary sector throughout the year.

A panel which comprised of AoC East Midlands Sports Strategy Steering Group members, the Regional FE Sports Strategy Co-ordinatorand a representative from Voluntary Action Leicester had the tough job of picking the overall winner. All commented that it was very challenging to pick the victor from such and impressive bunch of applications, however, they decided that the overall winner from South Nottingham College stood out above the rest.

Connor Hardy, 18, has completed 480+ hours of volunteering this year in a number of different sports and settings. He has also undertaken numerous coaching and leadership qualifications and has been an active member of the BCS National Ambassadors Programme. He has helped coach children and young people, led and organised competitions and provided advice on developing national volunteering programmes for young people. Connor has not only lent his skills to the College and the local community, but has also spent time in Belfast and South Africa helping to educate others through the Colleges' Balls to Poverty project.

Connor shocked the panel in just how much he has done in his spare time this year and is a deserved winner of the award and a credit to his College and the region. He was a special guest of England Hockey at the Champions Trophy held in Beeston, Nottingham on Wednesday 14th July in order to be presented with his awards.

Connor watched GB men narrowly defeated by Germany 3-2 before receiving his awards from England Hockey president Simon Mason and Regional Children & Young Peoples 2012 Legacy Co-ordinator Gaynor Nash. Both of which commented how impressed they were with all that Connor has done and achieved this year. He was presented with a Champions Trophy t-shirt donated by Zenith and vouchers by AoC East Midlands to reward him for all his hard work this year.

The East Midlands FE Sports Volunteer of the Year is part of the East Midlands FE Volunteering and Leadership programme which received the Inspire Mark earlier this year. The programmeis unique to the further education sector in the East Midlands and looks to promote volunteering and leadership to students. The programme also helps to reward and provide incentives for students completing their hours of volunteering within their College, schools or local community.
