AoC 16-18 funding survey - allocations for 2010/11

Event Title

Publication date: 01 March 2010

AoC’s latest funding survey confirms significant financial pressure on Colleges in the area of 16-18 education because the extra money allocated to Colleges by the Learning and Skills Council is tied up with extra places. Key points:

  • the number of students is expected to rise by at least 22,000 ( 2.8%) and by up to 30,000 (3.8%), once additional growth funds have been allocated.

  • funding of 16-18 education places in Colleges is expected to rise by £72 million (2.3%) to £3,428 million. Some additional funds will be allocated by LSC before April

  • Colleges face a 0.5% cut in funding per student in 2010-11 which will require them to offer more restricted programmes as a result of the expansion.

  • DCSF insisted on a tight budget settlement for 16-18 education in Colleges while taking a more generous to the funding of local authority administration (the £50 million for 16-19 staff) and developmental activities in schools (the £2.8 billion spent on the Standards Fund, some of which is for 16-18 year olds)
