16 - 19 Summer Conference 2011

Event Title

Publication date: 28 March 2011

Wednesday 29 June – Friday 1 July, Robinson College, Cambridge

This annual Conference, run by the SFCF in association with AoC, is a key event for those working mainly with young people in either a Sixth form, Tertiary or General Further Education Colleges. For a second year it is to be held at Robinson College, Cambridge. Members may come for the whole Conference, or for part of it: the three days are separately themed around Policy, Teaching and Learning and Funding in order to facilitate day-rate attendance.

The conference is structured around three main themes over the three days. The framework of the programme is as follows:

Wednesday 29 June: Policy in context - The first day will be opened, hopefully, by the Secretary of State, Michael Gove MP. This will be followed by a keynote address from Mary Curnock Cook, Chief Executive of UCAS and will focus on how Government policies affect UCAS policies and their impact on Sixth Form Colleges.

Sir Michael Bichard, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Government, (and formerly Permanent Secretary at the Department of Education and Employment) will open the afternoon session with his keynote address ‘The new world order and what it means for education’. Discussion groups will follow focusing on key policy areas.

Thursday 30 June: Teaching and Learning - The day will be opened by Professor Paul Black from the Institute of Education, University of London. His main area of research is on classroom practices and assessment for learning. Donald Clark, board member of Ufi (learndirect) will provide a keynote address on E-Learning in the afternoon. We envisage a range of workshops taking place throughout the day.

Friday 1 July
: Funding – The morning session will be fully devoted to Funding with David Igoe, SFCF Chief Executive and Julian Gravatt, from the AoC, providing a joint session on the funding situation. We are hoping that the Conference will close with a keynote address from Andy Burnham MP, Shadow Education Secretary.

We would be grateful for volunteers to run workshops on the Teaching and Learning day and, in particular, workshops on sharing good practice and curriculum related strategies. If you or some of your college colleagues would be prepared to run a workshop then please contact the SFCF Secretariat by email.

A draft programme is available:   16-19 Summer Conference draft programme

The booking form will be e-mailed to Colleges towards the end of April and will be available on the SFCF website.
