National Health and Safety Conference 2010

AoC National Health & Safety Conference 2010   "A Healthy Profit"Martin P

The 2010 H&S Conference took place on 16 June.

Colleagues who attended this and previous events, will agree that the National H&S Conference is the key event in the College H&S calendar. We are all aware that Health & Safety must be managed as efficiently as other functions. Drivers for this include the moral duty towards people and the move towards a culture of “blame and claim”. As Colleges strive to keep pace with demands such as keeping staff and learners healthy, reducing compensation payouts and satisfying inspection requirements, they need practical tools to help them do this efficiently.

The Conference aims were that delegates should be able to:

  • Discuss and explore the College Health and Safety role
  • Review the previous year’s Health and Safety issues
  • Learn from key stakeholders within the College Health and Safety sector
  • Participate in a selection of interactive workshops and discuss key topics
  • Share knowledge and best-practice with other delegates, making new contacts to help solve workplace issues

All plenary and workshop presentations had a common theme of exploring the main health, safety and security issues of today and the implications these have on the College sector.

The programme included:

Plenary presentations:

  • Legal Update DENIOS
  • Operation Argus for Colleges (anti-terrorism)
  • OFSTED and Safeguarding
  • Challenges facing H&S practitioners in FE
  • Drugs in Colleges
  • Claims issues from an Insurance Company perspective
